Q&A with Arlington Committee of 100 member Judy Hadden

Why Arlington? What brought you to Arlington and what do you enjoy about it?

After moving from Michigan and living in a DC apartment for a year, we wanted to buy a house and luckily discovered Fairlington just as renovations on the 1940s homes were being completed in 1977.  We bought a townhouse and later a larger one because we loved living in Fairlington, loved Abingdon Elementary, and by then had 2 children.  Our final move was to another great Arlington neighborhood, next to Williamsburg Middle School, and now also the new APS elementary school construction site!

How did you first learn about the Arlington Committee of 100?

In April 2006 the Committee of 100 meeting topic was “Does Arlington Really Value Its Youth” and the panelists were Mary Hynes (then APS School Board member), Mary Ann Moran (Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth, and Families), and Fanuel Gebremedhin (Arlington Teen Network Board member).  As a Partnership member I was coordinating the Teen Network Board and I went to the meeting to support Fanuel and my friends, Mary and Mary Ann.  I began to occasionally attend meetings after that and in 2008 Cecelia Espenoza invited me to join the Committee of 100 Board.

What Committee of 100 Program did you find particularly enjoyable and why?

At each meeting I always learn something new, try to sit with someone I’ve never met before, and often have a chance to catch up with a friend --- so they’re all enjoyable!

Tell us a little about your professional experience, or an issue or cause that you're passionate about.

I’ve been able to spend most of my paid and volunteer time on outreach and involvement for families, children, and teens, in a huge variety of ways, for almost 40 years.

What do you like to do on your spare time?

Fun with my family in Arlington, Massachusetts, and Michigan --- ideally at a beach or on a lake!
