How Will Arlington Come Together in the Future?

This year marks the 65th Anniversary of the Arlington Committee of 100, Arlington’s gathering place to question and to learn about community issues. As we mark this milestone, we ask: how have community service and engagement changed through the years? And, more importantly, how will the ways that we interact as a community change in the future? Understanding these changes is vital for anyone seeking to know our neighbors and to make an impact in the community. Knowing what motivates volunteers is essential for people and organizations that are looking to drive engagement and community service. What is the role of new technology and how do changes in the broader zeitgeist impact how we meet our neighbors here in Arlington.

To start the conversation, we will welcome three long-time Arlington community participants, each with different experiences and lengths of service to the community:

John Milliken, active in Arlington government and politics for more than 40 years and a Member of the County Board from 1981 to 1990

Krysta Jones, Founder of Vote Lead Impact (VLI)

Hannah Dannenfelser, Arlington local and Community Involvement Ambassador at the Arlington Community Federal Credit Union

Commonwealth Attorney Debate

The Arlington Committee of 100 will host a debate for the office of Commonwealth Attorney for Arlington and the City of Falls Church.  Come hear and ask questions to incumbent Theo Stamos and challenger Parisa Dehghani-Tafti.  This debate will be moderated by Nancy Tate, former Executive Director of the League of Women Voters.

All are welcome. We invite you to learn about the Committee of 100's history and distinct approach to fostering constructive discussion. Please note that all attendees are expected to conduct themselves accordingly.  Signs and disruptive behavior are not allowed.

Are Our Children Safe at School?

The shocking stories come too often on the news: students and teachers facing a shooter in their school.  Arlington, to date, has not experienced the worst, but we need to be prepared.  As the new school year begins, we will look at how we are keeping our children safe at school.  What is the legal environment that regulates what is possible?  How are Arlington schools and police preparing and preventing, and how will they respond if the worst occurs?  What is it like to be a student today?  What are their concerns, and how do students want the community to help keep them safe?  Join the Arlington Committee of 100 for our first program of 2018-19 as we explore how best to keep our students safe.
